30 September 2000 - Olympic Regatta The final days sailing in the Star class saw the fleet leader from Brazil disqualified at the start, leaving the Brits and Americans to fight over gold. After a poor first half to the race Ian and Mark started pulling through the fleet, but were unable to catch the Americans and hence finished in silver medal position. An excellent result in a very competitive fleet.
29 September 2000 - Olympic Regatta With one day and one race remaining in the Olympic Regatta the GB Star team of Ian Walker & Mark Covell are overall 2nd in this very competitive fleet. With Brazil 1st and USA 3rd the medals are between these 3 teams, and the possible permutations are huge, but Ian & Mark need to finish 6 places ahead of the Brazilians to get their hands on a gold medal, and should the Brazilians finish in the top 5 they will win gold however the Brits fare. An exciting race awaits. February 2000 Olympic Selection By winning the Biscayne Bay Trophy in Miami, Olympic medal hopefuls Ian Walker & Mark Covell have been selected to represent Team GBR at the Sydney Olympics.
January 2000 - Miami Olympic Classes Regatta
Ian Walker & Mark Covell continued their progress towards selection for Sydney 2000 with a 5th place at Miami. Selection should be a formality now as this team have not been beaten by their fellow British competitors for 9 races. January 2000 - Selection Starts
Selection for the British Star Class place at Sydney began with the Bob Levin Memorial Regatta in Miami over the weekend of 8-9 January. Sponsorship United Airlines are to sponsor Ian Walker & Mark Covell as they prepare for the Sydney 2000 Olympics. September 1999 Ian Walker & M Covell prove they are to be taken seriously in this most taxing of Olympic classes, by finishing 4th at the Pre-Olympic Regatta in Sydney.
