April 2000
Finally the Olympic Trials are underway. The event takes place at Weymouth from April 15 - 24th, daily updates are available on the Chernikeeff Sailing Regatta - Olympic Trials Site.
Team GBR representatives have already been decided for the Laser (Ben Ainslie), Europe (Shirley Robertson) and Star (Ian Walker and Mark Covell) classes, and while all the other classes are taking part the final choice will not automatically be the trials winner.
The Tornado class will also compete at the European Championships in May to finally decide the crew to represent GBR, the Womens 470 crew will still have to qualify the country for a place at the Olympics by finishing in the top 9 at their world championships in May, and finally the RYA have the power to choose the representatives over the results this week or extend the trials into other events.
Probably the most eagerly awaited contest is in the 49er class with little between the top four teams of Andy & Ian Budgen, Ian Barker & Simon Hiscocks, Paul Brotherton & Mo Gray and Tim Robinson & Zeb Elliott, all four have shown flashes of brilliance over the last year, but have also suffered from a lack of consistancy.
We wish them all good luck for the event, and look forward to sending the strongest GBR Sailing Team to an Olympic event ever.

New Sail for Gold Website: www.sailforgold.co.uk is launched.
September 1999
With strict limits being implemented on the number of competing atheletes at the Sydney 2000 games, it is necessary for nations to qualify for each class. The number of competing nations will vary for each class with the Laser being the largest with 41 countries allowed to compete the Star, Soling and Tornado will have the least competing nations at 15 each.
How to qualify for each class varies, but is generally based on positions at major & world championships, there is however an ISAF Qualification Committee who will allocate spare places as the Olympics approach, the final date for all nominations is 10 August 2000.
As the host nation Australia are the only exceptions to this, with an automatic place in every class.
Currently Britain has qualified for a place in 8 classes, Mistral Men, Star, 49er, Soling, Tornado, Laser, Finn, 470 Men and Europe.
Qualification at this stage is for the Nation, and not the individual, it then becomes the responsibility of the RYA selection panel to select the competitor or competitors for each class...see below.
March 1999
The British trials for the Sydney 2000 Olympics, will take place from April 15th to 28th 2000, the events will, as ever, be held in Weymouth Bay.
This is a change from the selection process for Savannah 1996, when the team was selected a year before the event. Significantly while this event is billed as a trials, some classes may have other events to count, and the final decision for selection rests with a 'panel' who will choose the British representatives, and are not compelled to select the event winners.
