The 54 entries for the fourteenth Construction Industry Regatta, held on Wednesday 20th June at Grafham Water SC, were treated to perfect sailing conditions, sunshine and a moderate wind. Three races were sailed around a trapezoidal course using the average corrected lap time to sort out the placings, while giving the slowest and the fastest boats roughly the same amount of time on the water. The 54 boats represented 34 different companies from all sections of the Construction Industry. The Maunsell Team Trophy is decided by taking the best three results in each of the three races. Seven of the companies had three boats on the water with Alpha Project Management (APM) taking the Maunsell Trophy with Ove Arup and Partners second and Spirax Sarco third.
The racing for the individual trophies was dominated by P Jenkins and C Hatton of Haswells in their RS800 who won all three races, Graham William son and J Bell from Gunite Ltd finished second in races 2 and 3 a Merlin Rocket, John Curzon of APM in a Fireball was 2nd in race 1 and 3rd and 5th in races 2 and 3. P Jenkins won the Geofabrics Trophy for 1st overall and Graham Willamson took the ICE Presidents Trophy for the first over 45 years old. The racing was run impeccably by Peter Waghorn and his race team despite the shifting wind making it necessary to reset the course after every race. The event sponsors, Maunsell Ltd, Maccaferri Ltd, Geofabrics and Anders Elite provided a good lunch and drinks for all taken between races 1 and 2. For those in the Construction Industry the fifteenth CI Regatta will take place on Wednesday 19th June 2002 at Grafham Water SC - put it in your diaries now.
