1. SYDNEY 2000 OLYMPICS
_________________________
Well we are now only days away from the Opening of the 2000 Olympics, and the start of the sailing regatta. The races will be held between 12 noon and 5.00pm Sydney time which translates to 2.00 - 7.00am in the UK. So unless you are nocturnal then coverage will be down to highlights packages and the VCR.
Should you however decide to stay up late or rise early then positions round each mark will be available on the Internet. As soon as the URL are available then I will publish them.
For the last couple of days Team GBR, along with all the other sailing nations have been undergoing measurement.
Ian and Mark in the Star have had to shave off and refair a couple of millimetres from their keel, but I am not aware of any other minor problems with our team. Although both Iain Percy and Ian Walker are suffering from colds.
In the Tornado class the Australian crew have hit trouble with a new stlye trampoline, that apparently looks more like a net. This has potential advantages in reducing both wave and wind resistance, they plan to appeal against it's ban.
Regular updates on the British Tornado team of Hugh Styles & Adam May can be found at
www.kssa.fsnet.co.uk/Tornado/aaatop.htm
This site has regular updates from Huw's father and from time to time Huw and Adam themselves.
Finally I have just watched a Sky News report on the sailing at Sydney.
Reports say the winds are much stronger than expected, regularly 25 plus knots, and Sky were nice enough to show pictures of just about all Team GBR out practicing.
Ben Ainslie was interviewed and says it may well be a survival event with tactics almost non existant, should lead to the sort of footage the TV cameras love! although I should think from a sailing point of view the heavy air will suit him well.
Ben was also inline for carrying the flag at the Opening Ceremony, but the job has gone to Matthew Pinsent
