Please note new URL www.ukdinghyracing.com

If you are still using the old URL, or viewing any pages with dingyrac.force9.co.uk in the title bar then you should now be directed to the new site.

The aim of the site is to entertain like minded people who have a passion for dinghy racing or sailing. I have tried to keep the site as specific as possible, ie UK not worldwide although the info and chat will be of interest to many. The listings of Sailing Clubs and Class Associations are purely British so there are no huge lists of useless links to try and find one useful one.

1.Getting Rid of Weed

The following article comes from Colin Saunderson, but credit for the idea goes to Dave Marks & John Richards of Middle Nene SC. I hope the idea will help some inland clubs rid their water of weed that can ruin a seasons sailing.

I hope I don't need to answer the question "wot's that got to do with sailing?".

It is a real blight for many inland clubs who are located on relatively shallow former gravel pits. Thanks to Dave Marks and John Richards of Middle Nene SC there is a relatively simple method of control which so far has not been publicised much.

All you need is a large V shape cutting blade ( 8ft equilateral triangle) and 20 ft of towing chain. During the winter months, ie before mid April, drag the blade across the bed of your lake. Our boat has 1332cc so it is not that powerful. Whilst the water is cold the cut weed stays on the lake bed so no disposal problem. Provided your water is around 9ft deep and fairly turgid the weed doesn't grow fast enough to become a problem in the summer. In water only 6ft deep Middle Nene still have real problems in July and a second cut is needed. This year at Hunts SC this is our first year using this method. A divers inspection at the end of May was very encouraging and later trawling with an anchor supported this view.

The RYA will be passing the word around but I hope you will find space as well.

Probably not what you had in mind when the web page was set up but never mind.

2. The Quest for the Perfect Shape

This site opens with a very telling comment "Ever wondered why there are so many text books telling you how to alter the shape of a sail............but nobady tells you what the perfect shape is."
The site then goes on to try and answer the question, it is not light reading, but is well illustrated and may help many in their sail setting. Have a look it's worth a few mins, the site is by WB-Sails of Finland.

3.Hi-Tec Materials

More and more boats, fittings and spars are made of composites these days, and not only the production boats, many are home building in composites too.
However one of the questions I am regularly asked by email is where to get small quantities of material such as carbon fibre etc. Well recently I came across this site which appears to offer all you could want. I have not used them myself, but they look worth a try. There is no online ordering, but then again with this type of material you will probably want to talk to them first anyway.

4. Art Engel's Rules Pages

This site offers guidance on the Racing Rules online, something that few people have dared to try on the Internet. Most of the information is on this site but there are also links to other relevant pages.

With the new rules less than a year away you may wish to visit here rather than buy a book.
